The Subtle Art of Not Giving A Fuck-Mark Menson

  1. The deeper the pain, the more helpless we feel against our problems, and the more entitlement we adopt to compensate for those problems. This entitlement plays out in one of two ways:1. I’m awesome and the rest of you all suck, so I deserve special treatment.2. I suck and the rest of you are all awesome, so I deserve special treatment.
  2. if everyone were extraordinary, then by definition no one would be extraordinary.
  3. Being “average” has become the new standard of failure. The worst thing you can be is in the middle of the pack, the middle of the bell curve. When a culture’s standard of success is to “be extraordinary,” it then becomes better to be at the extreme low end of the bell curve than to be in the middle, because at least there you’re still special and deserve attention. Many people choose this strategy: to prove to everyone that they are the most miserable, or the most oppressed, or the most victimized.
  4. A lot of people are afraid to accept mediocrity because they believe that if they accept it, they’ll never achieve anything, never improve and that their life won’t matter.
  5. We all have emotional blind spots.
  6. The trick with negative emotions is to 1) express them in a socially acceptable and healthy manner and 2) express them in a way that aligns with your values.
  7. Emotions are just feedback.
  8. “One day, in retrospect, the years of struggle will strike you as the most beautiful.”
  9. “self-improvement” is really about: prioritizing better values, choosing better things to give a fuck about.
  10. The first failure is taking responsibility for everything that occurs in your life, regardless of who’s at fault.
  11. The second is uncertainty: the acknowledgment of your own ignorance and the cultivation of constant doubt in your own beliefs.
  12. The willingness to discover your own flaws and mistakes so that they may be improved upon. The fourth is rejection: the ability to both say and hear no, thus clearly defining what you will and will not accept in your life.
  13. The final value is the contemplation of one’s own mortality; this one is crucial because paying vigilant attention to one’s own death is perhaps the only thing capable of helping us keep all our other values in a proper perspective.
  14. It’s the idea of taking control over her own thoughts and feelings and being happy again.
  15. The beauty of poker is that while luck is always involved, luck doesn’t dictate the long-term results of the game.
  16. A person can get dealt with terrible cards and beat someone who was dealt with great cards.
  17. “Outrage is like a lot of other things that feel good but over time devour us from the inside out. And it’s even more insidious than most vices because we don’t even consciously acknowledge that it’s a pleasure.”
  18. Many people become so obsessed with being “right” about their life that they never end up actually living it.
  19. Evil people never believe that they are evil; rather, they believe that everyone else is evil.
  20. The man who believes he knows everything learns nothing.
  21. We cannot learn anything without first not knowing something. The more we admit we do not know, the more opportunities we gain to learn.
  22. The only way to solve our problems is to first admit that our actions and beliefs up to this point have been wrong and are not working.
  23. Manson’s law of avoidance on them"The more something threatens your identity, the more you will avoid it."
  24. “It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.”
  25. Avoiding failure is something we learn at some later point in life.
  26. Our proudest achievements come in the face of the greatest adversity.
  27. Our pain often makes us stronger, more resilient, more grounded.
  28. Death scares us. And because it scares us, we avoid thinking about it, talking about it, sometimes even acknowledging it, even when it’s happening to someone close to us.
  29. All the meaning in our life is shaped by this innate desire to never truly die.
  30. “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”

The 5 AM Club by Robin Sharma

Just finished reading "The 5 AM Club". Some of the best lines are:

  24. Everything you now find easy you first found difficult. With consistent practice, getting up with the sun will become your new normal. And automatic.

How To Be Creative By Hugh McLeod

Just finished "How to be creative by Hugh Mcleod". Sharing some important lines:
  1. Ignore Everybody.
  2. The creative person basically has two kinds of jobs. One is the sexy, creative kind. Second is the kind that pays the bills.
  3. Everybody has their own private Mount Everest they were put on this earth to climb.
  4. A fancy tool just gives the second-rater one more pillar to hide behind.
  5. If you accept the pain, it cannot hurt you.
  6. Never compare your inside with somebody else’s outside.
  7. “The first rule of business,” he said, chuckling at my naiveté, “is never sell something you love. Otherwise, you may as well be selling your children.”
  8. The most important thing a creative person can learn, professionally, is where to draw the red line that separates what you are willing to do, and what you are not.
  9.  When I see somebody “suffering for their art,”“it’s usually a case of them not knowing where that red line is, not knowing where the sovereignty lies.
  10. Selling out is harder than it looks.
  11. Nobody cares. Do it for yourself.

Sun Tzu's 31 Best Pieces Of Leadership Advice

There was no greater war leader and strategist than Chinese military general Sun Tzu.  His philosophy on how to be a great leader and ensure you win in work, management, and life is summed up in these 33 pieces of advice.  They can all be applied by you in your job when you go back to work next week:
  1. A leader leads by example, not by force.
  2. You have to believe in yourself.
  3. Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.
  4. If your enemy is secure at all points, be prepared for him. If he is in superior strength, evade him. If your opponent is temperamental, seek to irritate him. Pretend to be weak, that he may grow arrogant. If he is taking his ease, give him no rest. If his forces are united, separate them. If sovereign and subject are in accord, put a division between them. Attack him where he is unprepared, appear where you are not expected.
  5. The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.
  6. Supreme excellence consists of breaking the enemy's resistance without fighting.

  7. If the mind is willing, the flesh could go on and on without many things.
  8. Victorious warriors win first and then go to war, while defeated warriors go to war first and then seek to win.
  9. To know your Enemy, you must become your Enemy.
  10. Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
  11. Can you imagine what I would do if I could do all I can?
  12. Even the finest sword plunged into salt water will eventually rust.
  13. Engage people with what they expect; it is what they are able to discern and confirms their projections. It settles them into predictable patterns of response, occupying their minds while you wait for the extraordinary moment — that which they cannot anticipate.
  14. If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.
  15. Thus we may know that there are five essentials for victory:
    1) He will win who knows when to fight and when not to fight.
    2) He will win who knows how to handle both superior and inferior forces.
    3) He will win whose army is animated by the same spirit throughout all its ranks.
    4) He will win who, prepared himself, waits to take the enemy unprepared.
    5) He will win who has military capacity and is not interfered with by the sovereign.
  16. Be extremely subtle, even to the point of formlessness. Be extremely mysterious, even to the point of soundlessness. Thereby you can be the director of the opponent's fate.
  17. Strategy without tactics is the slowest route to victory. Tactics without strategy are the noise before defeat.
  18. There are not more than five musical notes, yet the combinations of these five give rise to more melodies than can ever be heard. There are not more than five primary colors, yet in combination, they produce more hues than can ever be seen. There are not more than five cardinal tastes, yet combinations of them yield more flavors than can ever be tasted.
  19. Opportunities multiply as they are seized.
  20. When the enemy is relaxed, make them toil. When full, starve them. When settled, make them move.
  21. Know yourself and you will win all battles.
  22. Move swift as the Wind and closely-formed as the Wood. Attack like the Fire and be still as the Mountain.
  23. Let your plans be dark and impenetrable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt.
  24. When strong, avoid them. If of high morale, depress them. Seem humble to fill them with conceit. If at ease, exhaust them. If united, separate them. Attack their weaknesses. Emerge to their surprise.
  25. All warfare is based on deception. Hence, when able to attack, we must seem unable; when using our forces, we must seem inactive; when we are near, we must make the enemy believe we are far away; when far away, we must make him believe we are near.
  26. There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare.
  27. The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.
  28. Treat your men as you would your own beloved sons. And they will follow you into the deepest valley.
  29. Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across.
  30. All warfare is based on deception.
  31. When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard.

President is Missing

I just finished reading " President is Missing" by James Patterson and Bill Clinton. It was a decent political thriller with its heart in the right place. Sharing some important lines of this novel:
1.                 Politics can be cruel in the way it treats its wounded.
2.                 Who’s more popular than a challenger?
3.                 His cards are probably better than mine, but he’s a kid, and I play poker for a living.
4.                 Until I’m dead, I’m alive.
5.                 He is a soldier looking for a war, a hero in search of a moment of heroism.
6.                 Nobody does anything for nothing.
7.                 Mourn your losses later, after the fights over, when you’re in the fight, fight.
8.                 Peaceful protest is one of the most admirable forms of patriotism.
9.                 Surrounding yourself with sycophants and bootlickers is the surest route to failure.
10.            Most people would wilt under the gaze, under the discomfort of silence.
11.            One of the things she has learned over the years is the art of not responding too quickly. It buys you time and makes you seem more deliberative.
12.            Sun Tzu said, “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer,”
13.            I appreciate your loyalty; keep your eye on the prize.
14.            It’s always easier just to take out the leader. If there is nothing else to learn from history, it’s that from humans to animals, from the most primitive to the most civilized, most individuals want to be led. Take out the leader and the rest of the pack panics.
15.            She isn’t exactly wearing a white hat in all this.
16.            A missed shot is far worse than no shot.
17.            Sometimes…smart people do dumb things.
18.            Trust can blind.
19.            Politics is little more than blood sport.

Palace of illusions

Just finished reading "Palace of Illusions by Chitra B Devkuni". This is a version of Mahabharat from Draupadi's point of view. It is very well written and every caste and character has been given decent weight-age. The book balances between miracle part and fact part without comprises the plot. I will recommend this book to get a different view. Some good lines are written below:

  1. A well-meaning man is more dangerous because he believes in the rightness of what he does.
  2. Your childhood hunger is the one that never leaves you.
  3. Is the desire for vengeance stronger than the longing to be loved? What evil magic does it possess to draw the human heart so powerfully to it?

Best Books on Mahabharat

From my childhood days, we have grown fond of epic Ramayana and Mahabharata. I always have this question in my mind whether they actually occurred or just myths of our religion. As I grow up, I read more about both of them and realize that I am quite getting fascinated towards Mahabharata and its different characters. Mahabharata has so many characters that you just can't decide which one is your favorite. Every character has a certain story and certain motive to join Mahabharata. Today I am going to share my list of books written on Mahabharata and its characters:
  1. Mahasamar- Narendra Kohli (07 book series based on Mahabharata and its contemporary views)
  2. Rashmirathi-Ramdhari S.Dinker (Based on Karna)
  3. Andha Yug-Dharmveer Bharti (Based on aftermath of Mahabharat)
  4. Karna's wife-Kavita Kane (On Karna's second wife)
  5. The secret of Mahabharat-Robert C.Doyle(Mythological fiction on Viman Parv)
  6. The palace of illusions-Chitra Devkuni (Mahabharat from Draupadi's point of view)

Life is what you make of it

Just finished reading "Life is what you make of it" by Preeti Shenoy. I must admit that it was worth a read. This book will actually give you feeling to value emotions of yours as well as of others. Some touchy lines of this books are:

  1. Sometimes decisions that are taken in the nick of a moment are the ones that have the power to affect a whole train of events that follow. But at the moment of taking those decisions, not much thought goes into them. They are taken in the normal manner and in retrospect, cause a great deal of contrition or remorse.
  2. They say destiny changes in moments sometimes.
  3. You don't need an occasion to make others feel good.
  4. Life is a celebration.
  5. The world is indeed a better place when there is love, friendship, acceptance, and hope.Powered by these, you can indeed overcome anything, including destiny.

Accidental Apprentice

  1. Every time I meet a new person I feel like there is a new book that has to be read, a new story that has to listen.
  2. The true worth of a job is revealed by the amount of time it takes you to quit it.
  3. I have learned more from life than books, and it has taught me that you need just three things to be truly happy in this world: a person that you love, a job that you like, and a dream that you live for.
  4. There are skeletons in everyone’s cupboard.
  5. Hardship must be borne.
  6. Sometimes it takes a trial by fire to overcome our greatest fears, to find out what we are truly made of.

Dongri to dubai

2) The quiet kills some people because they can't make peace with their thoughts.

Tuesdays with Morrie

Just finished reading Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. I get to know about this book via quora and instantly started reading. Its simply awesome and life changing book. It is in the league of Alchemist. A true must it is. Some important lines from this book are:

  1. Death is a great equalizer, the one thing that can finally make strangers shed tears for each others.
  2. Isn't it strange that when you are suffering, you feel closer to people who suffer then you ever did before.
  3. “People are only mean when they’re threatened,” “and that’s what our culture does. That’s what our economy does. Even people who have jobs in our economy are threatened, because they worry about losing them. And when you get threatened, you start looking out only for yourself. You start making money a god. It is all part of this culture.”
  4. "Be compassionate,”“And take responsibility for each other. If we only learned those lessons, this world would be so much better a place.”
  5. You need to make peace with yourself and everyone around you.
  6. Death ends a life, not a relationship.
  7. It hurts when you can’t be with someone you love. But you need to be at peace with his desires. Maybe he doesn’t want you interrupting your life. Maybe he can’t deal with that burden. I tell everyone I know to carry on with the life they know—don’t ruin it because I am dying.
  8. Sometimes, when you’re losing someone, you hang on to whatever tradition you can.
  9. We should be more open, to ignore the lure of advertised values, to pay attention when your loved ones are speaking, as if it were the last time you might hear them.
  10. Do the kinds of things that come from the heart. When you do, you won’t be dissatisfied, you won’t be envious, and you won’t be longing for somebody else’s things. On the contrary, you’ll be overwhelmed with what comes back.”
  11. There’s a big confusion in this country over what we want versus what we need.
  12. There are a few rules I know to be true about love and marriage: If you don’t respect the other person, you’re gonna have a lot of trouble. If you don’t know how to compromise, you’re gonna have a lot of trouble. If you can’t talk openly about what goes on between you, you’re gonna have a lot of trouble. And if you don’t have a common set of values in life, you’re gonna have a lot of trouble. Your values must be alike. And the biggest one of those values,“Your belief in the importance of your marriage.”
  13. Devote yourself to loving others, devote yourself to your community around you, and devote yourself to creating something that gives you purpose and meaning.
  14. Money is not a substitute for tenderness, and power is not a substitute for tenderness. I can tell you, as I’m sitting here dying, when you most need it, neither money nor power will give you the feeling you’re looking for, no matter how much of them you have.”
  15. These were people so hungry for love that they were accepting substitutes. They were embracing material things and expecting a sort of hug back. But it never works. You can’t substitute material things for love or for gentleness or for tenderness or for a sense of comradeship.
  16. All younger people should know something. If you’re always battling against getting older, you’re always going to be unhappy, because it will happen anyhow.
  17. Once you learn how to die, you learn how to live.
  18. Everyone knows they’re going to die,but nobody believes it. If we did, we would do things differently.”
  19. Everyone knows someone who has died.
  20. There is no experience like having children.’ That’s all. There is no substitute for it. You cannot do it with a friend. You cannot do it with a lover. If you want the experience of having complete responsibility for another human being, and to learn how to love and bond in the deepest way, then you should have children.”
  21. Don’t cling to things, because everything is impermanent.”detachment doesn’t mean you don’t let the experience penetrate you. On the contrary, you let it penetrate you fully. That’s how you are able to leave it.” I’m lost.
  22. As you grow, you learn more. If you stayed at twenty-two, you’d always be as ignorant as you were at twenty-two. Aging is not just decay, you know. It’s growth. It’s more than the negative that you’re going to die, it’s also the positive that you understand you’re going to die, and that you live a better life because of it.”
